I read this book years ago and felt much the same as you. I would love to experience it in audio, but 21 hours is quite a commitment! I'm glad you enjoyed your first audiobook - I've been listening for years, also in my car, and they are such lovely distractions from boring drives. :)

I was out of town Wednesday, away from news sources and didn't hear about what happened until Booking Mama told. Glad to know you're okay.

The book sounds wonderful and so does the audio. Most audio productions are done well, but not all are.

This was an all time favorite of mine. Glad the audio was good as well.

As you know, I love this book, arguably my favorite of all time. I would think that it would be marvelous on audio. I have never listened to an audio book, but think that choosing one such as "Middlesex" is a great first one to listen to. Please let us know if you have other audio suggestions, assuming that you choose to listen to others!

I've had this book on my shelf FOREVER and the length of it really puts me off. It sounds like it'd be amazing too..

I love this novel, it's one of my top 20 reads, so sweeping, and yes, bordering on being too much, it really isn't! I think most people are kind of sad when it's over...

The audio version sounds wonderful! Hard to listen to something like this with two young teens and a 9 yo in the van though...maybe too much information at this point.

"Brilliant" is exactly the word I would use. I adore this book. To think that one author can go to that extent of research -- by which I mean the histories of Greece and Detroit, not the hermaphroditism -- just astounds me. (Personal historical note: I read it while "Ferberizing," meaning I was up and anxious in the wee hours for several consecutive nights! Good to have a page-turner whe you're going through that process!)

I am marking your review for me to read later. I am reading this for my lit class this semester but we won't be starting it for a few weeks. Everyone has great things to say about it. I can't wait to get to it.

This is a book that I'm really looking forward to reading at some point. I'm glad you enjoyed the audio version!

I have still yet to get on board with the audiobooks. I don't drive as much as I used to so I'm not entirely sure when would be the best time to listen to an audiobook anyway.
But this is a book that I definitely want to read. It has been on my shelf for years but there is something that always makes me put it off for some reason. Not sure what it is but I hope that eventually I will get around to reading it because I think that it will end up being a worthwhile read.
