I read Digging to America right after it was published - like I do all of her books - and I really enjoyed it. It stayed with me a long time. My exact notes are at work. But I liked how gentle the story was yet still to the point on what it was to be American.

I, too, read DTA when it was first published. I liked it. I agree about the detail! I'm going to add Ladder of Years to my TBR list. And now I'll click on the link to The Big Girls. I LOL at your 7th heaven/Sopranos comment.

I always enjoy Anne Tyler, I'd say my favorites are Patchwork Planet, Accidental Tourist and the Amateur Marriage, along with this one, but I've pretty much read them all.

I can hardly believe she is almost 70 years old now. I just hope she keeps writing!

We read this and loved it. Since we are gearing up for our adoptions soon I am reading all I can about other people's experiences!

I really enjoyed this book by Tyler. It's the only book I've read by her, so I don't have anything to compare it with. I found it especially relevant with the current American debates on immigration, assimilation, etc.

Rebecca

Honestly, I wasn't crazy about this book. This was the first Anne Tyler book that I had read, and it left me not wanting to read any of her others.

Sarah

You've piqued my interest. I've read four Anne Tyler novels over the past 16 years. I generally have found her novels to be fairly forgettable (usually about a middle aged woman living in Baltimore...), although the one where the woman deserts her family ("Ladder of Years") was, perhaps the most thought provoking to me. Anyhow,I do indeed now want to add AT's latest to my list.
